Rest Is Not Laziness: Permission for the Weary Woman

If you were raised to earn your worth through doing, rest can feel like failure. Here is a kinder framework.

Many of the women who come to me are exhausted not because they lack discipline, but because they have too much of it. They have been strong for everybody. Rest feels indulgent — even wrong. Yet rest is not the opposite of a faithful life; it is part of its design.

Four kinds of rest

Sleep is only one of them. When you are still tired after eight hours, you are usually missing one of the others.

  • Physical rest — sleep, stillness, and unhurried meals.
  • Mental rest — a break from decisions, notifications and planning.
  • Emotional rest — being somewhere you do not have to perform.
  • Spiritual rest — prayer, worship, silence, time in creation.

A weekly rhythm

Choose one three-hour window each week that belongs to none of your roles. Protect it the way you would protect an appointment for someone you love.

Tell the people around you what you are doing. Rest survives when it is named, not when it is squeezed into leftovers.

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

Matthew 11:28

You are not a machine with a productivity problem. You are a person who needs rest.
