Five Gentle Herbs for a Stressed Nervous System
✦
Traditional plant allies for tension, restless evenings and the wired-but-tired feeling — plus how to use them well.

Herbs are not a replacement for rest, food and boundaries — they support them. These five are traditional favourites for women whose nervous systems have been running hot for a long time.
The five
- ✦Chamomile — the classic evening tea, traditionally used for tension and digestion.
- ✦Lemon balm — bright and calming; often used for a busy, looping mind.
- ✦Oat straw — nourishing and mild, traditionally used over weeks rather than days.
- ✦Ashwagandha — an adaptogen traditionally used for stamina under long-term stress.
- ✦Lavender — used in tea and aromatically for winding down before bed.
How to use them
Start with one herb at a time so you can tell what is helping. Give a nourishing herb two to four weeks before deciding.
For tea, use a heaped teaspoon per cup, cover while steeping so the volatile oils stay in the cup, and steep ten minutes.
Important
Herbs interact with medications and are not all appropriate in pregnancy, while breastfeeding, or with thyroid and autoimmune conditions. Always check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding something new.
Choose one herb, use it consistently, and let it support the changes you are already making.
