Gentle Movement When You Have No Energy Left
✦
What to do when exercise feels impossible — a graded approach that builds capacity instead of draining it.

If workouts leave you flattened for two days, the answer is not more discipline. It is a smaller dose, applied more often, until your body trusts you again.
Start below your capacity
Choose an amount of movement you are confident you could repeat tomorrow. For many women that is a ten-minute walk, not a class.
The goal for the first fortnight is to finish feeling better than when you started — every single time.
A four-week progression
- ✦Week 1 — Ten-minute walk, five days.
- ✦Week 2 — Fifteen-minute walk, plus five minutes of gentle stretching.
- ✦Week 3 — Twenty-minute walk, plus two short sessions of bodyweight strength.
- ✦Week 4 — Keep the walks, add hills or a slightly quicker pace on two of them.
Strength matters for women
Two brief strength sessions a week protect bone density, metabolism and mood, especially through perimenopause. Sit-to-stands, wall push-ups and carrying shopping all count.
Movement should deposit energy into your account, not withdraw it. Start smaller than feels worthwhile.
